Descripción general del contenido del recurso.

"This thesis examines whether unusually negative financial news is associated with increased short-term market volatility, measured by absolute VIX movements. The analysis is based on more than 1.3 million cleaned and deduplicated news articles, drawn from a raw dataset of around 2 million entries collected via the GDELT database and classified using FinBERT, a language model specialized in financial text. Daily sentiment scores are aggregated and used to identify extreme negative events based on rolling z-scores and quantile thresholds. Their impact on future VIX movements is analyzed across multiple time horizons using several statistical methods, including two-sided independent-samples t-tests, chi-square tests of independence, Cramér’s V as a measure of effect size, and conditional probability analysis. The results show that days with particularly negative sentiment are consistently associated with higher volatility movements. The effect is strongest for the next trading day and decreases over longer horizons. While the findings are statistically significant, the economic magnitude remains moderate. A sub-sample analysis by volatility regime further reveals that the effect is concentrated in high-volatility market conditions, where the association is approximately twice as strong as in the full sample, while no statistically robust association is detected in calm market conditions. Overall, the results suggest that extreme news sentiment is systematically related to short-term volatility dynamics and may provide useful information for risk management and forecasting, particularly during periods of elevated market stress".
