Adaptation and Evidence of Validity of the Psychological Need States in Sport Scale

Abstract This multiple study aimed to cross-culturally adapt and validate the Psychological Need States in Sport Scale for the Brazilian sport context (PNSS-S-B). Four translators, 28 athletes and five experts (Step 1), 641 athletes (581 athletes; for Step 2 and 60 athletes for Step 3). Evidence based on content, response process, and internal structure, as well as reliability and temporal stability, were evaluated. It was concluded that 26-item PNSS-S-B distributed into six subscales (Autonomy Satisfaction, Autonomy Frustration, Competence Satisfaction, Competence Frustration, Relatedness Satisfaction and Relatedness Frustration) can be used to evaluate the perception of satisfaction and frustration of needs states among athletes in the Brazilian sport context regardless of sex, age group, and type of sport.
