Anti-aging Effects of Metformin

Aging is an irreversible and natural phenomenon. At the biological level, aging is caused by various molecular and cellular damages over time. Evidence of Anti-aging were observed in Yeast, Worms and Mice with metformin. Clinical trials, including the MILES (Metformin In Longevity Study) and TAME (Targeting Aging with Metformin), designed to assess the potential benefits of metformin as an anti-aging drug. Preliminary analysis of results from MILES indicated that metformin may induce anti-aging transcriptional changes. Based on the available evidence, it was suggested by these two trials that the beneficial effects of metformin on aging and health span are primarily indirect via its effects on cellular metabolism and result from its antihyperglycemic action, enhancing insulin sensitivity, reduction of oxidative stress and protective effects on the endothelium and vascular function.
