Resumen

Descripción general del contenido del recurso.

The paper examines the history, current state, and prospects of the translation of Ukrainian prose into Serbian. Although the number of Ukrainian prose works translated into Serbian remains relatively small, the tradition of such translations is long-standing. This study, based on verified empirical data, covers the period from 1859 to 2024. In examining the translation and reception of Ukrainian prose in Serbia, three distinct periods can be identified: 1. from 1859 to 1930, 2. from 1945 to 1976, 3. from 2000 to the present. Since translations assume different functions in different historical contexts, the paper analyses translations published in scattered periodicals, collections, anthologies, and complete volumes, situating them within the cultural and historical frameworks of their periods. Attention is paid to the selection of works for translation, the languages from which the translations were made and the reception of these translations. Special focus is on the translations produced in the late twentieth and early twenty- first centuries – a period during which more than half of the total translations were published. This surge is attributed not only to the growing recognition of Ukrainian culture and literature as distinct from Russian, but also to institutional developments such as the establishment of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Belgrade in 1991 and the emergence of Ukrainian literary scholarship and translators within the Serbian academic milieu. Work on translations of Ukrainian authors – including not only prose but also poetry, drama, and essays – as well as efforts to promote these translations and Ukrainian literature and culture more broadly, is increasingly being approached in a systematic, professional, and scholarly manner.
