The Beliefs and Experiences About Home Hemodialysis: A Review of the Current Evidences

Home hemodialysis (HHD) is associated with better quality of life and survival in patients with endstage renal disease than center hemodialysis. Global interest in HHD has therefore increased in the last few years. The results of studies show that patients and their families in the predialysis phase who have received comprehensive information about all dialysis modalities are more likely to choose a home dialysis modality. However, educating patients and their caregivers and providing medical, technical and social support are important for maintaining a successful HHD program. Healthcare professionals should also be provided with opportunities to gain practical experience and knowledge about HHD. Better understanding of the beliefs and attitudes towards HHD of patients and their caregivers can help healthcare professionals support them more effectively. The aim of this review is to overview the beliefs and experiences of patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals about HHD, as well as to make evidence-based recommendations for overcoming barriers and establishing a successful HHD program.
