In recent decades and in order to reduce the problem of aquatic pollution, especially that caused by the presence of heavy metals, more efficient physicochemical and biological techniques have been sought for the removal of metal contaminants. A technique that currently calls attention is the use of aquatic macrophytes such as Salvinia species, which are characterized by accumulating high concentrations of Cr, rapid growth and low nutrient requirements. In aquatic environments, the toxicity of Cr varies with temperature, pH and water hardness. Among the most important, the pH of the medium stands out since it determines the chemical species of Cr that predominates in a certain environment. Thus, the objective of the present work was to evaluate the effect of the pH of the medium on the biochemical and physiological parameters involved in the removal of Cr (VI) and Cr (III) by Salvinia species. Under the experimental conditions and based on the results obtained, it was possible to demonstrate that the accumulation of Cr (VI) / Cr (III) in the Salvinia species follows a seasonal variation (higher in summer than in winter) as well as in the metabolic activity, suggesting that an interaction between both aspects determines the amount of metal removed. In addition, the great variability observed in the physiological parameters shows that S. minima and S. rotundifolia are highly plastic species against stress and suitable for phytoremediation processes. In this sense, the accumulation of chromium would occur through the combination of two coordinated mechanisms: a) the union (adsorption) of chromium on the surface of frondes and lacinias and, b) the taking of chromium by the cells. Once the metal enters the cell, other organ-specific mechanisms would be launched that would allow them to resist the presence of chromium. In frondes and lacinias an antioxidant response mechanism is the accumulation of insoluble soluble phenolic compounds that have antioxidant function and chelating molecules. All this response is based on the alterations of the primary metabolism observed at the level of soluble carbohydrates mainly and on the indicators of oxidative stress damage. In addition, at the cellular level, it is proposed that Salvinia could have the capacity to reduce chromium, since a reduction of Cr (VI) was observed by extracts of fronds and lacinias of S. minima and S. rotundifolia, without the addition of exogenous reducing agents. These results were confirmed by tests performed by XANES demonstrating that both S. minima and S. rotundifolia have the capacity to reduce Cr (VI) to Cr (III). It was also observed that the reduction percentage was significantly higher in extracts from lacinia than in those from frondes, which could represent an additional defense mechanism in this organ. Regarding the influence of pH on the remediation capacity of S. minima and S. rotundifolia, it was possible to confirm that S. minima seems to be a suitable species to remove Cr (VI) / (III) from acidic aqueous solutions, whereas S Rotundifolia is more efficient to remove Cr (VI) in alkaline solutions and Cr (III) in acidic aqueous solutions. It has also been found that S.minima has mechanisms to alter the pH of the medium, thus regulating the process of removal of Cr (VI), whereas S. rotundifolia did not present them under the experimental conditions tested. The information presented in this work represents an advance in the elucidation and understanding of the metal / physicochemical parameters interactions that occur during phytoremediation and that must be taken into account to ensure the success of the process. From the point of view of environmental sanitation, the implementation of both species of Salvinia is a green alternative for the remediation "in situ" of Cr (VI) as they are able to reduce it to its less toxic form Cr (III) with the consequent reduction of environmental risk.In general it is concluded that the Salvinia species analyzed in this Thesis are an interesting alternative for the sanitation of waters contaminated by heavy metals. The data provided by this thesis work will be very useful in the design of phytoremediation plants that should work throughout the year.
