The thesis addresses two main goals: 1) the design of a method for visually strength grading sawn timber of Argentinean Eucalyptus grandis according to European standards, 2) the development of models for machine strength grading this timber species. For this purpose an empirical research project was carried out, which included four samples of beams and one sample of boards subjected to bending, one sample of boards subjected to tension parallel to the grain and one sample of specimens subjected to compression. The influence of the visual parameters on the mechanical properties was scrutinised, and different strength, stiffness and density profiles with the corresponding limits for the main visual features were analysed in comparison with the international strength class system established in the European standard EN 338 (1996), also bending properties were compared with those corresponding to tension and compression parallel to the grain. A relatively poor relationship between knot ratio and bending strength was found in comparison with results reported for other timber species. The presence of pith, often associated with other defects as large fissures, significantly reduces bending and tensile strength and the modulus of elasticity in bending, tension and compression, but little influence was registered on compression strength. The research also reveals particularities for this timber species as the high ratio of modulus of elasticity and strength to density, in comparison with other deciduous species, among others. The usefulness of single and combined mechanical parameters for predicting the mechanical properties of this timber species was studied. The combination of modulus of elasticity with density and knot ratio produces the highest correlation with strength, but a very good relationship was also found between strength and global modulus of elasticity by itself. Strength, stiffness and density profiles based on both the combined grading parameter and the modulus of elasticity were analysed, and very good yield was obtained in both cases, proving that this timber species may advantageously perform in a machine strength grading process. Both models were also applied to the sample of boards subjected to tension tests and their effectiveness was proved with similar yield to the one found for bending specimens. The dynamic method of measuring the fundamental frequencies of vibration was analysed and results give evidence of its effectiveness for determining the elastic properties of this timber species in different sizes and quality. Other important aspects connected with the performance of this Argentinean sawn timber as a building material were studied and presented: i) influence of knot ratio on tensile strength parallel to the grain, ii) relationship between global and local modulus of elasticity in bending, iii) compression strength and stiffness in relation to the bending ones, by testing specimens prepared from the same pieces, iv) fitness of the adjustment factors for bending strength and modulus of elasticity according to EN 384 (1996), v) influence of the source on timber properties, vi) influence of the distance to the pith, vii) influence of the height in the tree. The results obtained encourage further studies regarding the other strength and stiffness properties of this fast-growing wood, which exhibits very good behaviour connected with the investigated values, and may therefore advantageously perform in solid as well as in glued laminated timber structures.
