Resumen

Descripción general del contenido del recurso.

Objective: To determine the prevalence and pattern of dyslipidemia among patients with newly diagnosed Type II Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and to evaluate its association with clinical and demographic factors. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out at the Department of Medicine, Liaquat University Hospital, Hyderabad/Jamshoro, in the period of July to December 2025. Newly diagnosed T2DM patients aged 30-70 years were enrolled. T2DM was defined based on standard diagnostic criteria including fasting plasma glucose ≥126 mg/dL and HbA1c ≥6.5%. Dyslipidemia was defined as the presence of at least one abnormal lipid value based on standard cut-offs. Results: Of total 118 patients, the median age was 51.0 years (IQR 40.0–58.0). Dyslipidemia was observed in 112 (94.9%) patients. A significantly higher association of dyslipidemia was observed among males (p-value =0.036), obese patients (p-value =0.004), duration of diabetes ≤5 months (p-value =0.033), those with low or inactive physical activity (p-value <0.001), and those with a positive family history of diabetes (p-value =0.040). Of 112 dyslipidemia patients, the pattern of dyslipidemia revealed that hypercholesterolemia occurred most frequently 91 (81.2%), followed by hypertriglyceridemia 68 (60.7%), and low HDL-C 63 (56.2%). Mixed dyslipidemia (≥2 abnormalities) was present in 78 (69.6%) of patients. Conclusion: Most newly diagnosed T2DM patients had dyslipidemia, commonly presenting with mixed lipid abnormalities, and these were significantly associated with male gender, obesity, low activity, short diabetes duration, and family history.
