Riepilogo

Descripción general del contenido del recurso.

This study appraises the trajectory and dimensions of bilateral relations between Nigeria and the Republic of Korea (South Korea) from 1980 to the present. It explores the historical evolution, strategic motivations, and multifaceted nature of their diplomatic, economic, and socio-cultural engagements. The establishment of formal diplomatic ties in 1980 marked the beginning of a robust partnership anchored on mutual economic interests, geopolitical positioning, and South Korea’s strategic expansion into Africa as a middle power. Employing a qualitative and historical analysis approach based on trade data, diplomatic records, and policy documents, the research examines the sectors and structures that have defined the bilateral relationship, including trade dynamics, development assistance, high-level diplomatic exchanges, and cultural diplomacy. Despite asymmetries in economic development and global influence, Nigeria–South Korea relations have remained largely cooperative and development-focused. The analysis reveals a steady growth in bilateral trade, diversification of exchanged goods, and a strong presence of South Korean enterprises and institutions in Nigeria. However, it also identifies structural challenges—such as policy inconsistency and governance issues in Nigeria—that have constrained the full realization of the relationship’s potential. The paper concludes that while the partnership remains mutually beneficial and symbolically significant, its sustainability will depend on strategic policy realignment, stronger institutional cooperation, and Nigeria’s internal economic reforms. This appraisal contributes to broader discussions on South–South cooperation, middle power diplomacy, and Africa–Asia relations in the 21st century.
