The Effects of Internet Literacy Self-Efficacy on Digital Health Literacy Among University Students Receiving Health Education

Aim: This study aims to examine the impact of internet literacy self-efficacy on digital health literacy among university students enrolled in health-related education programs. Method: The research was conducted with 280 students selected through simple random sampling from a population of 750 students enrolled in the health management program at a foundation university in Istanbul. The research was conducted using a quantitative method and has a cross-sectional design with a descriptive-correlational nature. Data were collected online between March 1 and May 15, 2024. Data were gathered using the Socio-Demographic Data Form, the Internet Literacy Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Digital Health Literacy Scale. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS 25 and AMOS 25 software. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and regression analysis were used to test the hypotheses. Results: The mean internet literacy self-efficacy score of the participants was 4.40; and the digital health literacy score was 2.69. The mean sub-dimension scores ranged from 4.02–4.65 and 2.42–2.94, respectively. According to the regression analysis, the B coefficient obtained in the effect of the sub-dimensions of internet literacy self-efficacy (trustworthiness, creation, technical knowledge, and getting information) on the sub-dimensions of digital health literacy (information searching, evaluating reliability, determining relevance, navigation skills, adding content, and protecting privacy) ranged from -0.149 to 0.246. According to YEM, internet literacy self-efficacy significantly and positively affects digital health literacy (β=0.61; p<0.05), and the model indices are at an acceptable level. Conclusion: These findings indicate that internet literacy self-efficacy is a critical factor in enhancing digital health literacy. The study suggests that interventions aimed at improving digital health literacy, particularly among health management students, may be more effective when focused on these specific dimensions.
