Aspimultiols B and C, Two New Steroids From the Leaves and Rhizomes of Aspidistra multiflora

Two new polyhydroxylated steroids, including one spirostane-type (1) and one pregnane-type (2) skeleton, together with three known analogs, (25R)-spirost-5-en-3β-ol (3), (25S)-5β-spirostane-3β-ol (4), and (25R)-spirostane-1β,3β,4β,5β-tetraol (5), were isolated from Aspidistra multiflora. For the first time, a pregnane steroid 2 was declared from the Aspidistra genus and steroids 3 and 4 were announced from the A. multiflora species. Their chemical structures were elucidated by using IR, UV-Vis, NMR, and HRMS-ESI spectroscopic assessments. The cytotoxic effects on MCF-7 and HeLa cells, as well as the nitric oxide (NO) inhibitory properties in RAW264.7 cells, of all purified compounds were evaluated. Compounds 2 and 5 meaningfully expressed the NO inhibition (IC50 respective values meant of 30.75 and 84.93 μm).
