Two stories of Juana Manuela Gorriti under Historical-Philosophical Analysis: La quena and “La novia del muerto”

In this article, I introduce the Argentine writer Juana Manuela Gorriti (1816/8–1892) and analyse a short novel, La quena, and a short story, “La novia del muerto”, both written by her. My approach is historical-philosophical, based on the hypothesis that her literary works, which belong to the Latin American Romantic movement, incorporate political and social reflections. These reflections address themes such as the role of women in society, as well as the place and the treatment of Indigenous peoples and slavery. First, I provide a biographical overview to establish the historical context. Next, I outline the main currents of Argentine thought during her time, particularly the Generation of '37 in the Río de la Plata. Then, I examine the two texts mentioned above, included in Sueños y realidades (1865). Finally, I offer some concluding remarks. Fil: Strok, Natalia Soledad.
