Geothermal fields in subduction-related orogens are closely linked to areas characterized by young magmatic and tectonic activity, both in arc- and back-arc settings. The spatio-temporal interaction of quaternary volcanic complexes with regional extensional and transtensional structures might favor a hydrothermal circuit between meteoric water and magmatic fluids. This study covers a structural analysis of the geothermal field developed on the western flank of Cerro Domuyo, Argentina. The results suggest that the fluid dynamic of the Domuyo geothermal field is directly conditioned by pre-existing basement structures, possibly reactivated as normal faults from the Late Miocene to recent times, and giving rise to the development of the Domuyo geothermal field. These structures would have been generated as normal faults during the Late Triassic-Early Jurassic, conditioning the geometry of the sedimentary sequences of the Neuquén Basin. Among them is the Manchana Covunco fault, the main N-S structure present on the western flank of Cerro Domuyo. Fission track apatite (FTA) and (U-Th)/He in apatite (AHe) cooling ages confirmed the presence of the late cretaceous-paleogene compressive period documented in the region, characterized by a first compressive pulse that would have been started in the Late Cretaceous ( ̴89 Ma); followed by a stronger second compressive pulse initiated during the Eocene ( ̴49 Ma), with its last records of activity in the Oligocene ( ̴29 Ma). This last phase would have been responsible for the reactivation and inversion of the Manchana Covunco fault. The predominance of lineaments and conjugated fractures orientated NO-SE/NE-SO, would have a close relationship with the late cretaceous-paleogene compressive period identified. By contrast, populations of fractures and lineaments orientated E-O and N-S would be linked to the major structures of the basement identified. FTA and AHe cooling ages also suggest that the intrusive phase of Domuyo Volcanic Complex would have caused a thermal disturbance already for the Pliocene ( ̴3,39 Ma), and lasting until the Pleistocene ( ̴0,36 Ma), possibly affected by strong post-glacial pleistocene processes; while its volcanic phase would have cooled some time between Late Miocene and Pliocene (6,5 ± 1,7 Ma). Based on the lineament density analysis, basement and Precuyano units are proposed as the potential reservoir level for the geothermal field. The Neogene to Quaternary reactivation of the faults and their associated fracture systems is probably linked to an extensive local regime related to the beginning of Domuyo Volcanic Complex activity and concentrated along previous structures; or associated with a regional extensive regime interpreted for the foreland during this period.
