In the 90's, the countries which comprise the Spanish-American region must face the challenge of designing new policies in s&T, in the context of globalization processes in economy and technology. Therefore it becomes necessary to count with normalized indicators in s&T. This research article presents the provisional results of the joint program that the Spanish-American Network of Indicators in S&T, together with the Inter-American Work Group on indicators in s&T, sponsored by the OEA,
develops at the University of Quilmes. Firstly, the twelve indicators considered as fundamental are introduced and, on this ground, the "map" of the region is described. Secondly, some complementary data is added, and some estimations on the region are presented, by drawing upon the data collected. Finally, methodological problems and the quality of the data obtained is discussed.
