This doctoral thesis presents the results of research carried out in central-western Catamarca province in the Republic of Argentina. The primary focus of this research has involved spatial and morphological investigations of communication and transport routes that existed during the period of Inka occupation, in a study area covering the southern areas of the Valle de Hualfín and northern Sierra de Zapata. This dissertation compiles the results of various studies carried out in recent years within this area and in other areas of the Valle de Hualfín. The theoretical framework applied to this research is that of Landscape Archaeology, where geographical space is considered not only in terms of its physical characteristics, but also as a type of social construction. In other words, the landscape reflects a constantly evolving set of relationships between human populations and their natural environments. This approach has required a systematic methodology which has included both micro- and macro-scale investigations of the various types of routes identified along with their associated sites. Microscale morphological analysis allows consideration of the formal characteristics of a given route, while more holistic macro-morphological analysis allows reconstruction of the broader landscape context, focusing on significant spatial relationships between the various areas studied. The entire system can thus be understood in terms of its own internal logic and meaning, while an organizational model can also be created, related to the social practices and relations that gave rise to the landscape as a whole. Approximately 60 km of roads and trails were identified and studied, which represents a significant contribution to knowledge of the region´s incaica connections, especially in view of the lack of previous research on the subject. The basic units of analysis were three routes that come together at the site of El Shincal de Quimivil. One arrives from the locality of La Aguada del Norte Chico in the department of Belén, the second connects El Shincal de Quimivil with the agricultural areas known as Las Vallas and Los Colorados, and the third is an intermittent road that runs between El Shincal de Quimivil and the Tambillo Nuevo site located in the El Tambillo river valley. The Los Colorados area is also accessed by a separate branch that may originate in the Las Lajas region. Each of these routes show distinctive formal elements related to the various social processes that took place along their lengths. The route that leads from La Aguada to El Shincal de Quimivil and then continues to the southwest towards the site of Watungasta in the Valle de Abaucán, is associated with state-level communication and provisioning activities, and makes up part of the main mountain road that runs towards the southernmost portion of the Kollasuyu in Argentina. The routes that lead to the agricultural fields of Las Vallas and Los Colorados, whether from El Shincal de Quimivil, Las Lajas, or Pozo de Piedra, are secondary branches that provided access to an expansive food production area. Visibility analysis and micro-scale studies of the routes' morphology and cross-cutting relationships have allowed particular relationships of power to be elucidated, and have also allowed study of incario pattern of settlement, mobility, and understanding and use of the landscape. The research presented here has to some degree surpassed its original objectives, by opening up new lines of research at both the local and regional levels, such as that involving analysis of kancha residential structures associated with communication routes. New information has also been provided regarding networks of routes that were previously missing from regional settlement maps. Finally, new interpretations have been developed regarding variability in the uses of the various routes studied, based upon survey and excavation of associated sites.
