Some of the factors which alter the nutritional environment in uterus are not well-known yet. One of them is the variation in maternal blood supply to the fetuses. The purpose of the present study is to determine: (1) the effect of experimentally bound uterine vessels on body weight and length, and on craniofacial growth; (2) whether the neurocranium and face may be differentially altered by the vessel binding; and (3) if the differences found may be related with the position of fetuses in the uterine horns. Three groups of adult Wistar rats were used: (a) control, without any kind of treatment; (b) operated, by binding both uterine vessels to the mother; and (c) sham-operated, similarly treated as (b), except vessel binding. After birth, body weight and length, as well as neurocranial and facial length, width and height were measured on the pups. Data were processed by one way-ANOVA and LSD tests. While body weight diminished 13%, body length was 21% lesser in malnourished than in control animals. Craniofacial growth was not affected uniformly by uterine vessel binding. While neurocranium delayed growth in about 12%, the facial region underwent a growth delay of 36%. There were nonsignificant relationships, however, between growth delay and the placement and the position of fetuses in the uterine horns. These results suggest that when morphological differences are to be analytically studied, beyond the well-known postnatal environmental factors, the antenatal ones must also be taken into account.
