Resumen
Descripción general del contenido del recurso.
It is known that a successful dancer may depend on the amount of muscle relative to body mass and that the excess of fat is a disadvantage on ballet performance. To study the body composition, body muscle and fat mass of ballet dancers is very important to control their health and performance, due to the intensive training of this artistic activity. The objective of this investigation is to describe the body composition changes of the dancers of the National School of Ballet from Cuba in two moments of their growth, maturation and development process. A longitudinal study of 54 girls and 40 boys of the dancer professor specialty between 15 and 20 years old was made. An anthropometric protocol of 13 measurements was applied in order to determine the body composition, body muscle and fat mass using the Ross and Kerr procedure. There were significant differences in adiposity between sexes and females always showed significantly higher values than males. Body muscle of a lot of male dancers raised significantly from one year to the other, while female dancers presented an stability in this body component for all ages. In general, body composition values, across all ballet dancers examined, revealed important information to dancers and masters of ballet.
