The ontogenetic differentiation involves size (volumetric) and/or shape (morphometric) changes. The object of this study is to know how cranial changes are evoked in growing rats between the 20th and 80th days from birth. The following null hypothesis was tested: "if craniofacial changes are due to size only, then all variables should be correlated among themselves, since they should vary only in a linear and isotropic way". The rejection of linearity implies that at least part of the observed variation is to be explained by shape changes due to the differential growth between, at least, two variables . Wistar rats were subjected to the following four treatments: (1) control: animals fed on a stock diet ad-libitum; (2) chronic undernutrition: animals fed on 50% of the diet given to controls; (3) acute undernutrition: animals fed on 33% of the diet given to controls; (4) chronic undernutrition plus hormonal treatment: individuals fed on as (2) plus periodic injections of testosterone for males and estradiol for females. Radiographies were taken every ten days and the length, width and height from both the neurocranium and face were measured. Multiple correlation tests for each sex and treatment were done by the SYSTAT 7.0 package. The obtained results show that in controls of both sexes and in undernourished injected males the null hypothesis should be accepted, since both major components grew keeping their proportionality constant. In both chronic and acute undernourished males and females, and in injected females, the null hypothesis was rejected, since linearity was broken and shape changes became evident. In other words, undernourished-injected males kept the "control growth pattern" in view of the anabolic properties of testosterone. The undernourished-injected females showed the same growth pattern as seen in undernourished animals, agreeing with the catabolic properties of estradiol. The present experiment also showed sexual dimorphism in the physiological behavior of growth under stressing environmental conditions.
