Resumen
Descripción general del contenido del recurso.
In spite the bulk of information on malnutrition in Argentina (undernutrition and overweight), is difficult to compare different studies because of their heterogeneity of techniques and methodologies. The objective of this collaborative work was to analyze the nutritional status of the scholar population from six provinces: Buenos Aires (Brandsen and La Plata), Catamarca (Catamarca), Chubut (Puerto Madryn), Jujuy (San Salvador de Jujuy), La Pampa (Santa Rosa and Toay), Mendoza (General Alvear) by using the same methodology. Body weight (kg) and height (cm) were measured in a sample of 15,011 schoolchildren from 2003 to 2005. Height for age (H/A), weight for age and height (W/A and W/H), and body mass index (BMI) were compared with specific centile values from the National Center of Health Statistics (NCHS). Low height for age (LH/A), low weight for age (LW/A), and low weight for height (LW/H) were calculated below the 5th centile based on the recommendations of the Word Health Organization (WHO). Overweight (OV) and obesity (OB) were estimated following the criteria of the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) based on the adult BMI cutoffs (25 and 30 Kg/m2 respectively). The socio-environmental information of the areas under study comprised environmental, demographic, economic, social indicators. These indicators were relieved from the Censo Nacional de Población y Vivienda 2001 (CNPyV 2001, INDEC), Encuesta Permanente de Hogares (EPH, INDEC), Dirección de Estadísticas de Salud del Ministerio de Salud de la Nación (DEIS, MSyA) and other government organizations. The overall prevalence of undernutrition (LH/A, LW/A and LW/H) and excess of body weight (OV+OB) were respectively: Jujuy 23.5% and 12.8%, Catamarca 25.9% and 10.8%, Mendoza 12.5% and 17.1%, La Plata 13.5% and 18.9%, Brandsen 10.5% and 21.3%, La Pampa 9.6% and 22.1% y Chubut 8.7% and 26.7%. Malnutrition showed regional differences which resembled a clinal variation: whereas the undernutrition decreased from north to south of the country, the overweight and obesity increased in the same direction. These results are consistent with the socio-environmental characteristics since the northwest region presented the lowest level of economic activities, the greatest percentages of poverty and the highest rates of maternal and infant mortality and the worse sanitary conditions. The findings suggest the necessity to continue with multicentre studies in order to achieve an integrate picture on the nutritional status of Argentinean children and adolescents.
