Stability testing for secnidazole 500 mg coated tablets of national production was performed and the expiration date was determined by the shelf life method. A validate high-performance liquid chromatographic method for secnidazole quantification was used. Chromatography was carried out on a RP-18 column with a methanol-water (50:50, v/v) mixture as mobile phase and wavelength fixed at 320 nm on the UV detector. The effect of the humidity over the medicine stability was analysed by means of the placement of samples in hydrostats with controlled humidity of 75, 84 and 92%. Organoleptic characteristics, secnidazole identification, determination, dissolution assay and the others quality parameters established were fulfilled during stability testing. The developed formulation was stable 30 months after its manufacture. Study of the humidity influence showed a weight gain lower to 2.2% and proved that tablets stability was not affected under high percents of relative humidity.
