Resumen
Descripción general del contenido del recurso.
Vegetables exposed to heavy metals as Cd, Cu, Zn y Hg usually show a concentration increase of a family of certain cystein and glutamic acid-containing peptides named phytochelatins or y-EC (y-glutamylcysteine) peptides. Furthermore, plants are an adequate material for environmental studies, because they are the first step in trophic chains and have a direct, opened and limited contact with their surrounding media. From this point of view, it is very attractive their potential utilization as biomarkers of heavy metals exposure, and probably as useful tools for environmental diagnostic. As phytochelatins have a low molecular weight (up 12 kDa) and have no aromatic amino acids, their detection is usually complex and very sensitive methods have to be applied, as isotopic markers, antibodies techniques (RIE, ELISA), and spectroscopic ones, as well as UV and fluorescent methods, mass spectroscopic, NMR and atomic absorption. Purification of phytochelatuis often requires cliromatograpliic (as HPLC) and electrophoretic methods. In the present work the state of art related to the structure, metabolic rol and environmental applications of the y-EC peptides are critically reviewed, as well as methodologies applied to their isolation, detection, purification and characterization. Finally, their possible application to bioremediation strategies and biomonitoring programs is analysed.
