Spanish America como o outro da América Spanish America as the other of America

Este artigo examina aspectos da história semântica do conceito de Spanish America nos Estados Unidos do século XIX. A análise de discursos e textos de políticos, funcionários de governo, jornalistas e intelectuais americanos indica a tendência de se imputar a Spanish America e seus habitantes características opostas àquelas atribuídas à auto-imagem coletiva americana. Ademais, nota-se que essas qualidades negativas se aglutinam em torno de três "regiões" semânticas": cultural, temporal e racial. O texto dá conta de como e quando essas "regiões" semânticas surgiram e das ações projetadas ou justificadas por sua articulação.<br>This article examines aspects of the semantic history of Spanish America in nineteenth-century United States. The analysis of speeches and texts by American politicians, government officials, journalists and intellectuals suggests a tendency to give Spanish America and its habitants some traces opposite to the ones done to the American collective self-image. Those negative qualities cover three "semantic regions": culture, time and race. The article exposes how and when those "regions" have risen and the actions projected from and justified for their articulation.
