Imágenes de entresiglos

El trabajo analiza una serie de crónicas y fotografías del entresiglos puertorriqueño (XIX-XX), llevadas a la escena pública internacional cuando, en virtud del Tratado de París que puso fin a la Guerra Hispanoamericana, la isla deja de ser colonia española y se convierte en posesión de los Estados Unidos. Construidas por viajeros norteamericanos que llegan a Puerto Rico para registrar el cambio de dominación y el rostro isleño, las imágenes verbales e iconográficas seleccionadas exhiben los poderes de una mirada imperial que justifica el programa expansionista y colonizador, subrayando los relieves de una tierra dominable, dispuesta a entregarse al nuevo amo.
The article analyzes a series of chronicles and photographs at the beginning of the 20th century in Puerto Rico that were internationally published when the Treaty of Paris was signed, at the end of the Hispano-American War. Thus the island stopped being a Spanish colony and it became possession of the United States. The selected verbal and iconographic images were built by North American travellers who arrive at Puerto Rico to register the domination turn and the island face. These images exhibit the powers of an imperial glance that justifies the expansionist and colonizing program, emphasizing on the idea of a weak land ready to surrender to the new master.
