Este artigo discute a participação do jornalista e pensador político marxista José Carlos Mariátegui nos debates que ocorreram no Peru na década de 1920. Os temas das discussões analisadas no presente texto são: as Universidades Populares; a cultura nacional; as bibliotecas; a publicação de livros, revistas e jornais; o movimento estudantil; e o papel do Estado, dos indígenas e dos trabalhadores urbanos e rurais na elaboração de uma política de educação pública abrangente para os setores mais pobres da população daquele país.<br>This article deals with the participation of the journalist and Marxist political thinker José Carlos Mariátegui in the debates that occurred in Peru in the 1920’s about the Popular Universities; the national culture; the libraries; the publication of books, magazines and newspapers; the students’ movement; the role of the State, the indigenous peoples and the urban and rural workers in the elaboration of a broad Public Education for the poorest strata of the population of that country.
