O gênero da história social de Natalie Zemon Davis

Este artigo realiza uma reflexão sobre a trajetória de Natalie Zemon Davis como historiadora social da cultura com perspectiva de gênero. Propõe que, ao nos concentrarmos em três momentos de sua produção: os artigos reunidos no livro traduzido ao português como Culturas do povo: sociedade e cultura no início da França moderna (1990 [1975]), e os livros O retorno de Martin Guerre (1987 [1983]) e Nas margens (1997 [1995]), se vislumbra a conformação de um certo estilo de praticar o ofício da história social que se tornou indissociável da dimensão de gênero. Longe de qualquer sentido programático, sua obra delineia muitas possibilidades de construir mais e melhor perguntas de pesquisa através de um olhar informado pelo caráter relacional que o gênero propicia. Precisamente, a singularidade de Davis foi sempre a capacidade de escuta, surpresa e aprendizado permanente frente à pesquisa histórica meticulosa como na vontade de estabelecer múltiplas interlocuções. O artigo sustenta que examinar o estilo historiográfico feminista de Natalie Zemon Davis em sua própria historicidade continua indicando caminhos para a história social como ofício neste começo de século XXI. This article explores Natalie Zemon Davis’ trajectory as a social historian of culture with a gender perspective. It argues that by focusing on three moments in her production: the articles gathered in the book translated into Portuguese as Cultures of the People: Society and Culture in Early Modern France (1990 [1975]), and the books The Return of Martin Guerre (1987 [1983]) and On the Margins (1997 [1995]), it is possible to glimpse the shaping of a certain style of practicing the craft of social history that has become inseparable from the gender dimension. Far from any programmatic sense, her work delineates many possibilities for constructing more and better research questions through the relational character that gender provides. Davis’ uniqueness has always been her capacity for listening, surprise and permanent learning in the face of meticulous historical research, as well as her willingness to establish multiple interlocutions. The article argues that examining Natalie Zemon Davis’ feminist historiographical style in its historicity continues to point the way for social history as a craft at the beginning of the 21st century.
