DISTRIBUCIÓN ESPACIAL DEL PARGO RAYADO LUTJANUS SYNAGRIS (PISCES: LUTJANIDAE) Y SU RELACIÓN CON LAS VARIABLES AMBIENTALES EN EL CARIBE COLOMBIANO SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF THE LANE SNAPPER LUTJANUS SYNAGRIS (PISCES: LUTJANIDAE) AND ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH ENVIRONMENTAL VARIABLES IN THE COLOMBIAN CARIBBEAN

En el Caribe colombiano la actividad de la pesquería de peces demersales es una de las más importantes, y en ella destaca el pargo rayado Lutjanus synagris por su alto valor económico. Con el objeto de determinar la estructura espacial de L. synagris y su relación con las variables ambientales, se realizó un crucero de investigación en frente de la costa norte de Colombia en el mar Caribe durante febrero de 2006. La distribución espacial fue evaluada usando geostadística y la relación con el ambiente a través de modelos aditivos generalizados (GAM). La talla media de madurez (LT 50%) se estimó en 21,35 cm. Esta especie presentó un patrón de segregación espacial con alta abundancia de peces adultos al norte del área de estudio, en el sector de La Guajira, y se asoció principalmente con aguas frías (< 25,0 &deg;C) que se derivan de la surgencia costera estacional de la zona. Hacia el sur, entre el río Buritaca y Riohacha se encontró localizada una alta abundancia de juveniles. Esta zona se caracteriza por la presencia de aguas cálidas (> 25,0 &deg;C), fondos blandos y lodosos, y un borde costero ocupado por extensas formaciones de manglar, que conforman un hábitat fundamental para el crecimiento, el refugio y la disponibilidad de alimento para peces pequeños. Los resultados sugieren que las variables ambientales modulan la distribución espacial de juveniles y adultos de L. synagris.<br>The demersal fishery is one of the most important in the Colombian Caribbean, and the lane snapper Lutjanus synagris is particularly prized for its economic value. To document the spatial structure of L. synagris and its relation to environmental variables, we conducted a research survey off the north Caribbean coast of Colombian during February 2006. Spatial distribution was evaluated using geostatistics and relationships with environmental variables were examined with Generalized Additive Models (GAM). Median size of maturity (LT 50%) was estimated as 21.35 cm. The species presented a pattern of spatial segregation, with a high abundance of adults in the Northern portion of the study area, in the La Guajira sector, associated principally with cold waters (< 25.0 &deg;C) produced by the seasonal coastal upwelling in this zone. To the south, between the Buritaca river and Riohacha, there was a localized abundance of juveniles. This zone is characterized by the presence of warm waters (> 25.0 &deg;C), soft muddy bottoms, and a coastal region containing extensive mangroves that are the fundamental habitat for growth, refuge, and food availability for small fish. The results suggest that environmental variables modulate the spatial distributions of juvenile and adult of L. synagris.
