La Malinche, la Virgen y la montaña: el juego de la identidad en los códices tlaxcaltecas Malinche, the Virgin and the mountain: the identity game in the tlaxcaltecas’ codices

Este artículo analiza la iconografía de la figura de la Malinche en el Lienzo de Tlaxcala, una historia visual de la conquista de México producida por los tlaxcatelcas en el siglo XVI, para demostrar que esta intérprete indígena de los conquistadores españoles fue convertida en un símbolo del propio altépetl de Tlaxcala y de su alianza con los recién llegados, así como de su relación privilegiada con la Virgen María. De esta manera muestra la manera creativa y compleja en que los indígenas mesoamericanos se apropiaron de los símbolos y discursos occidentales para defender su identidad y su autonomía política.<br>This article analyzes the iconography of the figure of Malinche in the Lienzo de Tlaxcala, a visual history of the conquest of Mexico produced by Tlaxcalan authors in the 16th century, in order to demonstrate that the Indigenous interpreter of the Spanish conquerors was transformed into a symbol of the polity of Tlaxcala and of its alliance with the conquistadors, as well as of their special relationship with the Virgin Mary. This serves to demonstrate the creative and complex ways in which Western symbols and discourses were appropriated by Mesoamerican authors in order to defend their identity and their political autonomy.
