Probablemente la primera mención en Italia de este tipo de membranófono se encuentre en el Gabinetto armonico (1716-23) del jesuíta Filippo Bonanni. El autor se refiere a él como strumento nelle Vendemmie. El grabado que acompaña el texto ilustra su estructura y modo de ejecución. Transcurridos más de doscientos cincuenta años, los datos suministrados por Bonanni se mantienen vigentes. En algunas de las comarcas de su actual distribución geográfica —zona meridional de la península— el tambor de fricción aún permanece asociado a ceremonias agrícolas.
