Summary

The paper begins with the problem of the self-knowledge in the first Oration and in De Antiquissima. After that, this problem is related with the historical origin of self-consciousness in the Scienza nuova, with Solon and Aesop as imaginative universals of the plebs and with the civil origin of philosophy. The conclusion is that there is a connection between the self-knowledge advised for this prescription and the philosophical reflection that support the epistemological basis of Vico’s science.
