COMPARISON OF PATIENTS ON HEMODIALYSIS AND CONTINUOUS AMBULATORY PERITONEAL DIALYSIS IN TERMS OF DEPRESSION, ANXIETY AND DISABILITY

In this study, the chronic renal failure patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) or continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (SAPD) therapy were compared in terms of aspects of disability, depression, anxiety with the investigation of the chronic illness and the pscyhiatric status. We evaluated 37 hemodialysis (20 male, 17 female, mean age 44.4) and 25 SAPD (17 male, 8 female, mean age 43.9) patients. Brief Disability Questionnaire (BDQ), Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety and Beck Depression Inventory were applied to all patients. More severe depression and more continuous anxiety scores were observed in the hemodialysis group when compared to SAPD group. No difference due to BDQ is observed between two patients groups. Hemodialysis patients seem to had more disability in some parameters when compared to SAPD patients. On the other hand strong correlation was observed between disability and depression, state and trait anxiety scores in hemodialysis patients, whereas in SAPD patients, disability correlates only to depression. SAPD therapy is believed to provide more comfortable and independent life to ESRD patients. The reason of severe disability and poorer life quality in hemodialysis patients may be due to different properties of these therapeutic approaches. High frequency of psychiatric problems and related disability, in hemodialysis patients were supposed to inversely effect the prognosis and compliance.
