Less invasive surgery for the treatment of idiopathic scoliosis in adolescents

ABSTRACT Objective: To present the results of the surgical treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) using a less invasive technique. Methods: Ten patients diagnosed with AIS underwent surgical treatment using a less invasive approach (bipolar technique) and were followed for 24 months. They were evaluated using radiographic parameters (Cobb angle and thoracic kyphosis) and clinical parameters (SRS-22 questionnaire, blood transfusion, and complications). Results: Correction in both the coronal and sagittal planes showed statistically significant differences compared to preoperative values. Four domains (function/activity, self-image, mental health, and satisfaction) as well as the overall SRS-22 score demonstrated statistically significant improvement at the 24-month postoperative evaluation. No intraoperative or postoperative blood transfusions were required in any patient. Rod breakage and pedicle screw loosening were observed in two patients, who required surgical revision. Conclusions: Correction of AIS using a less invasive technique allowed deformity correction with reduced surgical morbidity and resulted in improvement of radiographic and clinical parameters at the 24-month postoperative evaluation.
