La tecnología como institución : ¿qué nos pueden enseñar los estudios sociales de la tecnología?

En el artículo se plantea de manera provocativa si la sociología puede estudiar simultáneamente los aspectos sociales y materiales de las instituciones. En tanto tradicionalmente la sociología se ha preocupado exclusivamente por el lado social de las interacciones en la sociedad, los aspectos materiales han sido dejados para su estudio por otras ciencias. El autor propone analizar la tecnología como una parte constituyente de la sociedad, que además puede ser pensada como una institución. Para mostrar de qué manera las elecciones sociales se cristalizan y quedan integradas dentro de las tecnologías, y por lo tanto penetran las instituciones, en este artículo se estudia la construcción de un artefacto tecnológico: el sintetizador electrónico, empleando el marco teórico de la construcción social de la tecnología (CST). En el artículo se sugiere que este enfoque puede resultar útil para superar el dualismo entre lo social y lo material dentro de los estudios sociológicos. También se sugiere la necesidad de repensar las categorías de análisis para el estudio de las instituciones y de las organizaciones. Is Technology an Institution? This article asks provocatively if sociology can study the social and the material aspects of institutions. Whilst traditionally sociology has been concerned only with the social side of interactions in society, the material aspects (including technology) has been left for the interest of other sciences. The author proposes to analyze technology as a constituent part of society, that moreover can be think as an institution. In order to show how social choices get frozen and embedded within technology and, therefore inform institutions, this study draw upon a piece of technology: the electronic music synthesizer, following framework of The Social Construction of Technology (SCOT). The article suggest how this approach may be helpful to overcome the dualism between the social and the material. It also suggests the need to rethinking the categories of analysis of institutions and organizations as well as in technology.
