THE NEW DEAL ERA: AN EXAMINATION OF PRESIDENT FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT'S ECONOMIC POLICIES IN THE UNITED STATES, 1933-1941

This paper harps on President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal. This was a comprehensive set of economic policies and programmes implemented in the United States during the Great Depression, which began with the stock market crash of 1929. The New Deal sought to alleviate mass suffering, spur economic recovery, and overhaul the banking system to avoid future catastrophes. Using secondary sources and interdisciplinary methods, the paper analyses the key economic policies during the New Deal era, including the Works Progress Administration (WPA), which provided jobs for millions of Americans; the Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA), which raised farm prices and incomes; the Glass-Steagall Act (also known as the financial reforms), which separated commercial and investment banking; and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), which insures bank deposits. These programs had substantial accomplishments, including stabilising the banking system, boosting agricultural recovery, and delivering relief to millions of Americans. However, the New Deal was not without criticisms and obstacles, such as the AAA's displacement of sharecroppers and tenant farmers and the inability to confront bank consolidation. Overall, the New Deal had a tremendous and long-lasting impact on the American economy and society, changing the course of history and continuing to affect current economic policy discussions. Given the above, the paper concludes that the positive impact of the New Deal outweighed the negatives.
