The Archivo General de Índias established at the end of the XVIII century by the 'enlightened' administration of king Charles III started in recent years an advanced project of utilization of new technologies (digital imaging, optical disk storage, relational data bases etc). lt was carned out through the creation of an integrated system of automated archival processing that meets the needs of the capital functions of historical archives by means of three main modules - management of users, information and reference system, and system of digital storage of images.
