Summary

The main goal of this review is to shed light to the relationship between Phonological Awareness (PA) and the learning-to-read process. It is unquestionable the predictive role of PA during the early stages of reading acquisition on later reading achievement. To embrace a PA training program as a valid pedagogical methodology requires that the relationship between PA and reading don’t be understood as a simple causeeffect relationship. A not well understood methodology comprises a risk factor for educational purposes. Thus, PA is described as a complex cognitive construct and it is analyzed its relationship with reading as a potential assessment tool and as an effective didactic instrument for beginning literacy.
