Um estudo experimental sobre a percepção do contraste entre as vogais médias posteriores do português brasileiro An experimental study of the perception of the contrast between the back mid vowels of Brazilian Portuguese

No português brasileiro são atestados pares mínimos estabelecendo o contraste entre vogais médias abertas e fechadas na sílaba tônica. Entretanto, há casos em que estas duas categorias variam neste mesmo contexto, sem conseqüências semânticas. Com o objetivo de verificar se este fenômeno se reflete nas representações armazenadas na memória de longo prazo e empregadas nos processos perceptivos, os resultados obtidos por doze falantes do português brasileiro em uma tarefa de classificação das vogais médias posteriores &#91;o&#93; e &#91;<img src="/img/revistas/delta/v25n2/a05img02.gif" align="absmiddle">&#93; foram comparados aos obtidos em relação ao contraste entre &#91;o&#93; e &#91;u&#93;. Estimouse o grau em que estes mesmos resultados prevêem os resultados em tarefas de discriminação. Em comparação com o continuum &#91;u&#45;o&#93;, foram observadas uma média mais baixa dos coeficientes de inclinação e uma relação menos estreita entre os resultados das tarefas de classificação e discriminação no continuum &#91;o&#45; <img src="/img/revistas/delta/v25n2/a05img02.gif" align="absmiddle">&#93;. Os resultados sugerem que as representações das vogais &#91;o&#93; e &#91;<img src="/img/revistas/delta/v25n2/a05img02.gif" align="absmiddle">&#93; são menos distintas entre si do que as representações das vogais &#91;o&#93; e &#91;u&#93;.<br>In Brazilian Portuguese, minimal pairs are attested for the contrast between open&#45; and close&#45;mid vowels in stressed syllables. However, there are cases in which these two categories show free variation in this same context without semantic consequences. With the aim of verifying whether this phenomenon is reflected in representations stored in long term memory and used in perceptual processes, the results obtained by twelve Brazilian Portuguese native speakers in a classification task with back mid vowels &#91;o&#93; and &#91;<img src="/img/revistas/delta/v25n2/a05img02.gif" align="absmiddle">&#93; as stimuli were compared to the contrast between &#91;o&#93; and &#91;u&#93;. The degree to which those results predict vowel discrimination tasks was estimated. In comparison with the &#91;u&#45;o&#93; continuum, a lower mean of the slopes of the classification curves and a looser relation between classification and discrimination results were observed for the &#91;o&#45;<img src="/img/revistas/delta/v25n2/a05img02.gif" align="absmiddle">&#93; continuum. The results are interpreted as suggestive that the representations of the vowels &#91;o&#93; and &#91;<img src="/img/revistas/delta/v25n2/a05img02.gif" align="absmiddle">&#93; are less distinct from each other than the representations of &#91;o&#93; and &#91;u&#93;.
