Summary

Symphytum officinale L. is a herbaceous species, commonly known as comfrey in Brazil. Its leaves are employed in phytotherapy as topical anti-inflammatory, emollient and mild anesthetics. Aiming to contribute to the medicinal plant identification, which was recommended by RDC N° 17/2000 - ANVISA, the leaf external morphology and anatomy were carried out. The material was fixed, free-hand sectioned, either stained or undergone histochemical tests. The leaf is ovate-oblong or lanceolate, with acute or acuminate apex, cuneate base and slightly wavy margin. The epidermis is uniseriate, having anomocytic stomata, straight unicellular non-glandular trichomes and capitate glandular ones on both sides. Unciform unicellular non-glandular trichomes occur on the lower surface. Dorsiventral mesophyll, cells containing mucilage, midrib showing from one to eight collateral bundles, and petiole having various collateral bundles distributed as an open arc are observed.
