Summary

Although the fust report on the hemagglutinating properties of Ricinus cornmunis (Euphorbiaceae) seeds dates from 1888, the real breakthrough of lectinology took place in the sixties, when other remarkable properties of plant lectins were discovered. Since then, the definition of plant lectins has been, and still is, subject of discussion, but their most important physicocliemical property, the interaction with sugars, is always included. As for their purification, a general purification scheme, mainly based on affinity chromatography, is discussed. No matter the purification scheme used, the extraction conditions and the form under which the lectin is stored, can have a major influence on its purity and stability. The physiological role of plant lectins is still not completely understood, but it is clear that there are various. As various are also the applications of lectins: in the detection and purification of glycoproteins, in the separation of cells, in bloodgroup typing, mitogenic stimulation and histology.
