Summary

The cooperative sector, the initiatives of the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE), the autonomous micro-entrepreneurs and the micro and small companies, generally face limitations and disadvantages when it comes to competing openly in the market. This subordinate character is explained, in part, by the difficulty in accessing the formal credit market. Among the biggest obstacles are the asymmetry of information, the lack of real guarantees and the costs of operations equal to those of large loans, characteristics shared by the industry and cooperative sector, however, SSE organizations must deal with the stigmas that weigh on them, which makes access to credit even more difficult. Within the framework of the significant spectrum of what is defined as SSE, various alternatives arise in response to hegemonic finances, with diversity in practices, norms and requirements giving rise to what is called solidarity finance, which aim to democratize financial resources prioritizing the obtaining of a social benefit over the economic benefit. Given the diversity of options developed by cooperatives to obtain financing, is the Cooperative Revolving Fund of FECOOTRA, an experience that is part of solidarity finance and is recognized as significant for the sustainability of cooperative projects. Compared to a formal bank, the requirements are more flexible and the guarantees they demand are based on solidarity and trust.
