Resumo: O objetivo deste artigo é mapear alguns aspectos da trajetória do movimento negro brasileiro na sua fase contemporânea. Argumenta-se que houve uma mudança de perspectiva do movimento em relação ao Estado. Se até a década de 1980 muitos ativistas negros relutavam em estabelecer uma interlocução com o poder público, na década de 1990 e, sobretudo, na aurora do terceiro milênio, a institucionalidade converteu-se na arena privilegiada de pressão do movimento a fim de entabular políticas de igualdade racial. Tal mudança de perspectiva causou impacto nas políticas públicas de reconhecimento e de redistribuição.
