¿El pasado de quién? : Notas sobre las relaciones pasado-presente y Oriente-Occidente

La destrucción de los budas de Bamiyán por parte del gobierno talibán afgano y el saqueo del Museo Arqueológico de Bagdad han tendido a ser evaluados por Occidente bajo el prisma de la polarización entre un Occidente moderado y culto y un Oriente fundamentalista y brutal. En semejante diagnóstico reductor, se pierde de vista que la concepción dominante acerca del pasado de las sociedades donde han sucedido tales hechos es sensiblemente diversa de la que propone el discurso histórico occidental. La existencia de miradas radicalmente distintas y en tensión acerca del pasado no es, de hecho, algo nuevo. Una breve consideración sobre las divergencias entre la concepción egipcia y la cristiana del pasado del Valle del Nilo en los primeros siglos de la era cristiana y las existentes actualmente entre las distintas formas de percibir el pasado de los antiguos hebreos permite redimensionar nuestra comprensión acerca de la destrucción de tales "testimonios" del pasado. The destruction of Buda s colossi of Bamiyan by the Taliban government of Afghanistan and the ransacking of the Archaelogical Museum of Baghdad have been considered by the West through the lense of a polarization between a moderate cultured West and a fundamentalist brutal East. Such a simplistic diagnosis loses sight of the dominant conception of the past in the societies in which these facts have taken place, clearly diverse from the Western historical discourse. The existence of radically different prespectives on the past is, by no means, something new. A brief consideration on the divergences between Egyptian and Christian conceptions of the Nile Valley s past in the early centuries of the Christian era, and on the current differences between diverse ways of perceiving the Ancient Hebrew past allows us to redimension our understanding of the destruction of such "testimonies" of the past.
