Cuban Currency. The dollar and “Special Period” Fiction, de Esther Whitfield, comienza con una frase de Manolín, el médico de la salsa, correspondiente al estribillo de un tema musical de moda en Cuba en 1996, y que también aparece como epígrafe de la novela El rey de La Habana, de Pedro Juan Gutiérrez: “Somos lo que hay / lo que le gusta a la gente/ lo que se vende como pan caliente,/ lo que se agota en el mercado. / Somos lo máximo.” Pero la audiencia de estas dos –aunque la misma– estrofas, es distinta: la de Gutiérrez está dirigida a un público fuera de Cuba. Es esta relación, la de un lector extranjero con la literatura cubana, la que moviliza la escritura del libro de Whitfield. Publicada en la sección "Asteriscos".
