RESUMO Uma leitura atenta de Women Artists in all Ages and Countries (1859) e English Female Artists (1876) demonstra que Elizabeth Ellet e Ellen Clayton não se limitam a endossar categorias patriarcais sobre a produção artística feminina. Ao contrário, suas compilações biográficas problematizam algumas temáticas gerais, tais como condições de vida e de educação, existência de um estilo “feminino”, dentre outras. O panorama que tais obras oferecem é bem variado e contribui para trazer à luz muitos nomes pouco conhecidos e para celebrar o papel das mulheres na história da arte.
