Resumo: Este artigo discute o conceito de polarização social, dividindo o Brasil contemporâneo em polos que se identificam com Lula ou Bolsonaro. Com base na hipótese de que os desafios à consolidação democrática do Brasil têm impacto nesse contexto, analisamos cinco processos sócio-históricos, tendo como marco a fundação da Nova República. São eles: a constituição e as reformas do sistema político institucional; a mudança do contexto econômico nacional; as mudanças estruturais na sociedade brasileira; a estrutura da mídia tradicional e o surgimento de novas tecnologias de informação; e a mudança do contexto político internacional. A análise apoia a hipótese de que o fenômeno Bolsonaro é um sintoma que aprofunda, e não a origem, da polarização contemporânea.
