This study maps the circumstances of the introduction and subsequent development of civic education as a subject that was included in the curricula of elementary and secondary schools in 1960. In the 1960s, the aim of civic education was to indoctrinate students with the ideology of Marxism-Leninism. This contribution is based mainly on archival sources from various state archives and specialised archives of a number of institutions, but it also draws on a wide range of contemporary professional journals and textbooks.
