O pluralismo pós-utópico da arte

Em meados dos anos 1980, alguns autores, entre eles Arthur Danto, defenderam ideias que convergiam para a proclamação do fim da arte. Esse período histórico coincidia com a explosão dos estilos pós-modernos nas artes e com os debates filosóficos e culturais da pós-modernidade. Por "fim da arte" os autores pretendiam sinalizar que, nos anos 1960, uma espécie de fechamento ocorreu no desenvolvimento histórico da arte. Uma era de impressionante criatividade, que durou seis séculos no Ocidente, chegou a um fim de modo que qualquer arte que pudesse vir a existir daí para frente deveria estar marcada por um caráter pós-histórico. Esse caráter coincidia com a descrença nas utopias. Estas corriam de modo mais ou menos subterrâneo, mais ou menos explícito por todos os movimentos vanguardistas, então crepusculares. Nesse contexto, o argumento que este ensaio pretende defender é que, longe de indicar ausência de sentido crítico, engajamento ético ou militância política, o criticado "vale tudo" pós-moderno estava sinalizando a emergência de um novo tempo pós-utópico na cultura e nas artes. Na falta de um nome melhor, esse novo tempo tem sido chamado de contemporaneidade e arte contemporânea cuja característica primordial encontrase na avalanche pluralista e radicalmente diversificada de tendências estéticas que tem provocado profundas mudanças no papel dos curadores, na natureza dos museus e na posição contingente da crítica.<br>During the mid-80s, authors like Arthur Danto have championed ideas proclaiming the end of art. That historical period concured with the boom of post-modernist artistic styles and with the philosophical and cultural debates dealing with post-modernity. By "the end of art" those authors intended to mean that some sort of closure in the historical evolution of art had taken place in the 60s. A time of impressive creativity, having lasted for six centuries in the West, had reached its demise, and any form of art to emerge after that turning point would bear the signs of its post-historical condition, overlapping with the disbelief in the utopias that had somehow survived and - sometimes in the underground, sometimes explicitly - permeated all avantgardist movements, already vanishing back then. This paper sustains that, in a context like that, the much criticized post-modernist "anything goes" was in fact indicating the emergence of a new post-utopian phase for the arts and for culture in general. In face of the lack of more appropriated terms, this new phase has been called contemporaneity or contemporary art, its main characteristics to be found amid the pluralist and radically diversified maelstrom of aesthetical tendencies that so thoroughly has changed the role of curators, the nature of museums and the contingent position of art criticism.
