El Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) ha causado por décadas enfermedades de reconocida importancia económica en cultivos hortícolas en la Argentina. En el año 1995 afectó en particular a algunos de los cultivares más difundidos de crisantemo. Dado que el género Tospovirus del cual el TSWV es una especie, se define a principios de la década del 90, el relevamiento de los virus de este grupo que afectan a los cultivos ornamentales tiene como objetivo registrar los síntomas asociados a los mismos y establecer la necesidad de medidas de control. Utilizando técnicas biológicas e inmunoenzimáticas, se analizan 370 muestras de 22 especies de distintas localidades del partido de La Plata, y se detectan dos Tospovirus: el tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) en Aster ericoides, Aphelandra sp, Dendranthema morifolium cv. Dignity, Palisade y Southing Sun, Eustoma sp y Gerbera sp y el tomato chlorotic spot virus (TCSV) en Eustoma sp. Sobre esta especie ambos virus se registran por primera vez en el mundo. En las muestras analizadas no se encontró impatiens necrotic spot tospovirus (INSV), ni groundnut ring spot virus (GRSV). Los resultados indican que los Tospovirus no han tenido una rápida expansión en ornamentales, salvo en algunos cultivares de crisantemo, constituyendo sin embargo una amenaza potencial, como lo hacen preveer situaciones similares en diversos países de clima templado. Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) has been causing diseases of well known economic importance in horticultural crops in Argentina for decades. In 1995 it affected some of the most widely spread chrysantemum cultivars. The Tospovirus genus, of which TSWV is a species, was first defined at the beginning of the 90s, so a general survey of this group of viruses affecting ornamental crops is neccessary to document symptoms associated with the infection and to establish appropriate control measures. 370 samples of 22 species from La Plata district were analized using biological and immunoenzimatic techniques. Two Tospovirus have been found: tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) on Aster ericoides, Aphelandra sp, Dendranthema morifolium, var. Dignity, Palisade and Southing Sun, Eustoma sp and Gerbera sp, and tomato chlorotic spot virus (TCSV) on Eustoma sp. This host was previously unreported for both viruses. Impatiens necrotic spot virus (INSV), and groundnut ring spot virus (GRSV) were not found in any of the analized samples. Our results indicate that Tospoviruses have not had a quick spreading in ornamental crops, except for some chrysantemum cultivars.
