Summary

An important portion of the Magellanic-Fueguian canoe people's diet was composed of shell fish, mainly mussels (Mytilus sp.). This paper points out the need of studying samples that truly reflect the conditions of consumption in the past. It presents biochemical analyses of various shell fish species and evaluates the significance for human subsistence by comparing their costs and benefits vis-a-vis other resources. The study shows that the time needed for gathering, processing and consuming is not justified by the energy provided by these mussels. However, the mussels were, infact, massively consumed during six thousand years and constituted an important factor when deciding places for habitation. The paper concludes that mussels were beneficial for the groups adapted to littoral life, not merely asfood but because risks were reduced and the tension in the procurement of other resources of higher nutritional value was neutralized.
