Summary

Pollinators represent a critical selective force on the flowers they visit, in part, due to their ability to discriminate among different phenotypic traits. Flower blots, spots and lines have been traditionally interpreted as traits that guide pollinators towards rewards often concealed within the flower. In spite of the importance of nectar guides for pollinator-flower communication, the mechanisms involved in flower preference have received limited attention in natural populations. The aim of this study is to analyze the pollinator preference (if any) for different flower phenotypes in a population of the Andean monkey flower, Mimulus luteus, and relate such preference with nectar reward levels. M. luteus is an herbaceous species that shows a conspicuous nectar guide on the lower lobe of the corolla (a red spot), albeit flowers without guides and with more than one spot are also found within populations. This study was performed in a population of central Chile (Juncal) during the summer seasons of 2011 and 2012. I recorded the relative abundance of three flower phenotypes (flowers without spots, flowers with only one spot, flowers with more than one spot). In addition, I recorded the number of pollinator visits received by each flower phenotype, its nectar reward (nectar volume and concentration), and seed production. Results revealed that flowers with a single spot were no only more abundant, but received more pollinator visits and produced more abundant and concentrated nectar than the alternative phenotypes. The advantage of singlespotted flowers, however, did not translate into higher seed production. It is likely that the high level of autogamy present in M. luteus rules out the advantage of single-spotted phenotypes in the animal-plant communication process.
