Seabra Telles e a química do século das luzes

Historiadores brasileiros e portugueses estão de acordo quanto ao nome do primeiro “químico moderno” de língua portuguesa, trata-se do luso-brasileiro Vicente Coelho de Seabra Silva Telles (1764-1804). Neste artigo pretendemos investigar sua trajetória de pesquisa com o objetivo de conectá-la com os temas filosóficos, científicos e sociais próprios à química e à filosofia natural das últimas décadas do século XVIII. De modo mais específico, gostaríamos de descrever a maneira como as investigações de Seabra Telles dialogam com aquelas dos principais representantes da “República dos químicos” do século dito das Luzes. Brazilian and Portuguese historians are in agreement about the name of the first "modern chemist" of Portuguese language, the Luso-Brazilian Vicente Coelho de Seabra Silva Telles (1764-1804). In this article, we intend to investigate his research trajectory with the objective of connecting it with the philosophical, scientific and social themes pertaining to chemistry and the natural philosophy of the last decades of the XVIII century. More specifically, we would like to describe how Seabra Telles' investigations dialogue with those of the leading representatives of the "Republic of Chemists" from the so-called “Century of Enlightenment”.
